Sleep Deprivation and Its Link to Obesity

We all are aware that getting good sleep at night has a direct impact on how we feel during the day, but we are unaware that it may cause us to gain extra weight. If you are sleepy at work, you will be tempted to reach for a cup of coffee or maybe more and a slice of chocolate or a doughnut to boost your energy throughout the day!

The result of lack of sleep is to fight it off! The ultimate result? Unwanted pounds coupled with a lack of exercise set the stage for obesity and further sleep loss. As you become sluggish and sleepy, you may skip the gym or even order a take-out on your way home because you have no time to cook for your family. Later on, you find yourself back in your bed.

Foods You Need to Eat or Avoid To Sleep

Believe it or not, the type of food you eat affects the quality of your bed ZZZzs. If you choose the right food, then you're off to a great night in your Orange County mattress. However, if you eat food that could trigger an insomnia attack, then you just have to abandon any dream of a good night rest.

We'll roll out a few foods to avoid or to take for you to say "Hi!" to sweet dreams:

1. Dairy Foods. Dairy foods especially milk is a rich source of tryptophan which promotes or induces sleep. Other dairy products that are rich in tryptophan are nuts, bananas, honey and eggs so the next time you can't sleep, reach out for any of these sleep-promoting food.

2. Carbs. Yeah, I know. As much as we avoid it, carbs complement dairy products by increasing the level of tryptophan in our blood stream. Also, the next time you can't sleep, indulge in bread and cheese, or a bowl of cereal and milk.

3. Keep it small. Just because I recommended eating doesn't mean you can pig out. Heavy meals can tax our digestive system, preventing us from sleeping. Keep it light instead and eat just a small snack portion.
